The Town of Hay River’s Department of Recreation is responsible for developing, monitoring, and managing a community activity and recreation system which reflects the needs of the residents of Hay River.
The Department of Recreation is committed to providing affordable and accessible recreational programming for all members of the community. We provide various recreational programming for adults, seniors, youths, families, and the community.

The Town of Hay River Department of Recreation has altered programming to meet the Emerging Wisely guidelines for COVID-19. All programming and services are subject to change at a moments notice. The Community Centre has adopted a mask policy, masks must be worn in the building at all times.
The Hay River Department is proud to be able to offer affordable programming for all youth in the community. The majority of our programming operate out of the Community Centre, though on occasion can be held in different locations around town.

The After-School club is a daily program for kids to attend at the Community Centre. The club does games, crafts, and other active activities in the afternoons. Kids are provided with a free peanut-free snack. Participants may bring their own snacks, though they must be peanut-free.
The program is for kids ages 5 and up

Special Event & Full-Day Programming
The Town of Hay River Department of Recreation is happy to offer full-day programming for youth ages 5-12 for holidays and days with no school. Full-day programming emphasizes active, engaging, and safe play and activities. Programing is exciting and fun and ranges from a wide variety of options including: Sledding, Cookie Decorating, Sewing, Movie Theater, Snowshoeing, Active Games, Swimming, and more.
The Town of Hay River is proud to offer a wide range of fitness programs to the community. Our certified instructors provide fun, safe, and effective workouts for all fitness levels and abilities.
The Fitness Schedule is updated every 4-weeks, classes may be moved, added, or removed depending on attendance and interest.
All Spin classes are great cardio workouts that are easy on the knees and joints. The class is perfect for all fitness levels, it is easily adaptable for beginner and advanced levels.
Kickboxing and Boxing
Kickboxing classes combine classic boxing and kickboxing moves with high interval training to provide a fun and effective workout. Boxing classes teach the basics of boxing. Jab, cross, uppercut, and hook your way to a great workout. These classes are appropriate for all fitness levels
Nancy is new to Hay River and is excited to share her passion for yoga. Join her for a beginners class to learn the basics of the Hatha yoga practice.
Nancy teaches Beginner Gentle Yoga on Mondays. This class is ideal for beginners looking to try yoga for the first time or who are just beginning their practice.
Nancy also teaches the Thursday Yoga class suitable for people comfortable with yoga and are ready to improve their practice.
Yoga mats and blocks are available.
Yoga for Strength
We welcome Lynda to our team! Lynda is a Registered Massage Therapist and momma with a passion for yoga who joins us from Yellowknife.
Yoga for strength is a challenging series that will bring strength to your practice. Throughout the class, postures are linked together in a flowing (vinyasa) sequence, building not only strength but stamina and flexibility. With a focus on alignment and the awareness of breath and movement, this class is an opportunity to deepen your time on the mat.
During the Spring and Summer months, the Aurora Ford Ice Arena and the Curling Club are home to the Multi-Sport Drop-In program. Various sports equipment is made available for use. Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Pickleball, Badminton, and more!
The Multi-Sport is divided between our two ice surfaces; The Aurora Ford Arena, and the Hay River Curling Club.
Our regular drop-in rates apply.
Admission and Rates
Youth ages 12 and up are allowed to attend any drop-in time.
Youth under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a guardian 16 years or older.
See the AURORA FORD ARENA section below for more information on times when a guardian is not needed for youth under 12 years of age.
The Aurora Ford Arena
The Aurora Ford Arena will have basketball, volleyball, soccer, floor hockey, lacrosse, and a large open area for team sports. The majority of the day is open time to enjoy the facility. Drop-in and have fun!
After-School times are still available for the general public to enjoy. The After-School times are when we have a Town of Hay River staff supervising all participants. This allows youth under 12 years of age to attend the Multi-Sport Drop-In without a guardian. There is a limit of 10 spaces per day for children under 12. Please call the Hay River Community Center Customer Service Desk to reserve a spot. Ensure the child has either a membership, punch pass, or cash to pay the drop-in rate.
In the evenings we have specific sport times for different ages on the Large Side of the Arena. Bring your family and friends and enjoy pick-up games of your favourite sports. The Small Side of the Arena is still available during this time to all members of the public. See the weekly schedule below for times.
Changerooms will only be available during the evening or late afternoon Family, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Sport times.

The Hay River Curling Club
The Curling Club ice surface will be home to pickleball and badminton this spring and summer. You are able to drop-in or call ahead to reserve your spot no more than 1 week in advance. You can reserve 30 min or 60 min slots.
The Pickleball Schedule remains the same unless it is reserved for special events or local user groups.
Renting the Facility
The Aurora Ford Arena is available for private rentals. The Offseason Arena rates apply during the Spring and Summer Months.
