Hay River Healthy Community Strategy Announcement
Hay River Launches Healthy Community Strategy to Address Local Challenges
Hay River, September 26th — The Council of the Town of Hay River and the Healthy Communities Committee are proud to announce the launch of the Healthy Community Strategy, an interagency initiative aimed at defining and enhancing what it means to be a healthy community in Hay River. This strategy comes in response to the national trend in socioeconomic challenges linked to mental health issues, addiction, homelessness, and the impacts of inflation and labour shortages.
Hay River has a long history as a desirable place to live, work, and play, defined by its entrepreneurial spirit, abundant recreational opportunities, and a strong culture of volunteerism. Our community boasts countless success stories of businesses, organizations, and individuals who have made significant contributions extending beyond our municipal boundaries.
However, despite these strengths, the community faces pressing challenges that have affected social cohesion and the community’s overall well-being. The Healthy Community Strategy aims to create a framework for addressing current issues while promoting a sustainable future for all residents of Hay River. The Strategy identifies specific initiatives to advance reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and advance Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action. Town Council and members of the Healthy Community Committee look forward to working alongside the community over the next decade to strengthen Hay River as a place where everyone can thrive.
“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has engaged in this process,” said Brian Willows, Chairperson for the Healthy Communities Committee. “Our Council, and the Healthy Communities Committee, is committed to providing the leadership needed to execute this strategy, fostering a spirit of collaboration among businesses, government, Indigenous organizations, and community members. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities.”
