It is my pleasure to welcome you to Hay River, Northwest Territories, the Hub of the North! Hay River is known as the transportation hub of the NWT and this year we are a Hub of Activity! Our new recreation centre project is well underway and on schedule to be finished by the end of 2017. This new facility will house an arena, curling club, community centre, and a walking path to keep our residents and visitors active all year round. The doors will open just in time for the 25th Arctic Winter Games!
During the week of March 18 – 24, 2018, nine contingents represented by 1900 participants; 150 officials; 100 cultural performers; and 2000 volunteers, from across the circumpolar world will compete, celebrate, and share their cultures in the host communities of Hay River and Fort Smith. The South Slave’s communities of Enterprise, Fort Providence, Fort Resolution, Katlodeeche First Nation, and Kakisa will also be woven into the cultural celebration of the region.
The summer is always a Hub of Activity in Hay River. Fisherman’s Wharf operates weekly each Saturday and showcases the best whitefish and trout, along with local produce and arts and crafts. The Hay River Museum is also a Hub of Activity and provides a unique opportunity to view the history of Hay River and surrounding area. Whether it’s camping, fishing, baseball, scenic waterfall tours, cultural tours, floating or kayaking down the river, or golfing under the midnight sun, Hay River is the place to be in the summer. You’ll find us north of the 60th parallel with beaches that rival the south. Our tourism outfitters work hard to provide an exceptional experience for visitors and send you home with stories to share for generations!
Cold weather brings out the best in Hay River! The annual Polar Pond Hockey tournament has started to gain a cult following. Teams are making an annual pilgrimage and travel to Hay River to get back to basics by playing Canada’s game in rinks that an army of volunteers build out on the river ice. Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing are a few of the other activities that you will find during the winter in Hay River, and the warmth of our residents will bring you back year after year!
